The Perennial Plate is an online weekly documentary series dedicated to socially responsible and adventurous eating. Chef and Activist, Daniel Klein and Co-producer/Cameragirl Mirra Fine are traveling the world exploring the wonders, complexities and stories behind the ever more connected global food system.

About this episode: "It’s hard to put your camera down in India. With so much beauty and filth, food and poverty, happiness and stress: its an overwhelming (and wonderful) place to film. We came back exhausted, full and still overwhelmed (this time with the task of editing all the footage into a short video). Because India is a big place, and each area varies dramatically, we attempted to construct a day across India: from north to south, from dawn till dusk."

Sari Bari Quilt auction under way

The Sari Bari 2nd Annual Quilt Auction is now under way!

The quilts will be auctioned in three groups: The first set of quilts will be offered from October 1st to 10th, 2012 beginning at 12:00pm PST. The second set of quilts will be offered from October 10th to 20th, 2012 beginning at 5:00pm PST. The third and final set of Quilts will be offered from October 20th to 30th, 2012 beginning at 8pm PST.
The goal is $60,000 so please bid generously! Bid together with your friends and do your own drawing for a winner! It was an honor to be among these quilters involved in the Sari Bari Quilt Auction.

Sari Bari: "For this year’s auction, we’ve selected quilt artisans from around the world to create quilts of original design using both new and recycled saris. Their creations are, simply put, amazing."

In October, these one-of-a-kind works of art will be auctioned to the highest bidder. Many quilts will also be listed for raffle—so everyone has a chance to win!
All quilt sales will go toward the purchase a new building in Kalighat, the red light district where Sari Bari’s freedom work first began. You may place your bids at saribari.com at any time during the month of October. Winners will be announced November 1, 2012.

About Sari Bari: Sari Bari is a safe place of employment where women who have been exploited in the sex trade or who are vulnerable to trafficking can experience a new life in the making. The name "Sari Bari" comes from two symbols. A sari is the traditional clothing worn by women in India. In India, a sari represents the essence of womanhood. The word bari mean "house or home" in the Bengali language.

grandpa's stool

Finally finished Grandpa's Stool! I repurposed a vintage stool using grandad's precious clothing in a improvisational pieced quilting style inspired by the traditional Kantha embroidery of India. Using recycled fabrics as a base, the women use embroidery thread to sew small running stitches  completely covering most of the garment.
